Week 39 of our new life

Monday, Douglas away to golf again today, so another day of housework for me.  Spent some more time sorting out my laptop but cannot do anything yet until I get my old hard drive back, Michael has not come back to us yet as to when that will be.  Wandered around the garden just trying to decide what I am going to plant where and what I am going to sort out.  Joao is going to get on with the irrigation system hopefully this week as the weather is getting better and the plants are going to need watered.  We have put a hosepipe at the front of the house and one at the back but irrigation will work better for the amount of garden that there is to water.  Have replanted my big red tea cup with Anenomes, and I think I will now have to replant all my pots that we bought from the UK as the plants seem to have died off completely, I think they were in storage too long and dried out beyond life.
Tuesday, Zumba today and then lunch with all the girls from the class.  Went to Avenida in Sao Bras, had a great lunch with plenty of laughs.  So good to meet more new people and find out what they do with their time.  They are all so different but a really good crowd, all like their wine as top priority.  I had a good discussion with a couple of them regarding Portuguese Water Dogs, so they are all going to get me contacts as I am hoping Douglas will let me get one.  It will be great for exercise as we will be able to go for walks etc and will keep me occupied when Douglas is golfing.  I cannot find any women as yet that are interested in Golf so that leaves me out on a limb as I have no one to go with, Linda plays but she gave it up when she came out here two years ago and although I keep chipping away at her she has not quite decided if she wants to start playing again. But never say never. I am also trying to put the wheels in motion to sell my car back in Scotland, if I can do that then I will be able to buy my scooter, which will let me have a bit of Independence here, will need to drive but I think Douglas likes to be the driver, wont be able to get my dog on the back of a scooter though!!! We also need to change our driving licenses here to Portuguese ones which means that our UK ones will be taken away, not sure what that means if I still have a car in the UK.
Wednesday, out shopping today for new bedding for the twin room, I had the idea of having yellow, but don't think this will happen as cant seem to get yellow anywhere, red, purple, green or brown seem to be the colours around, so will have to rethink, managed to get mattress covers for the beds so that is a start.
Thursday, Finally got my hard drive back today, so loaded it on to the new laptop only to find that I need to convert each document individually for it to open on the new laptop, another couple of days work ahead. Out shopping for bedding again, no luck.  Portuguese lesson as well today. Also preparing food for tomorrow.  Tom and Linda, Keith and Pauline are coming for dinner.  Douglas has decided we are having Tomato and Basil Soup, Bacelhau Com Natas and Cheesecake. Pauline is a cealiac so I have adapted all the recipes so that we can all eat the same, and I have bought gluten free rolls so we can all eat without any embarrassment.  Soup and Cheesecake made and will prepare the Bacelhau tomorrow afternoon.  Douglas away to the five o clock club so I have managed to download and convert all my old files, thank goodness my laptop is now ready to go.  It is Windows 8 so that will take a bit of getting used to, also the keyboard is slightly different as it is Portuguese so just need to watch what I am doing.  Very happy to have a laptop up and running.
Friday, got the front area planted up with 10 different varieties of Cactus, looking pretty good and will look even better once they start to grow.  Went shopping, need to make sure we have enough wine for tonight and also needed to get a bottle of Baileys to add to the collection as I know that Pauline and Linda drink that.  Douglas then tidied the house and hoovered while I prepared the main course and made sure everything was organised food and drink wise for tonight. Becky´s birthday today, a big 12, they just seem to grow so quick, she bought herself clothes with her voucher so she was one happy granddaughter.
Who`s all grown up then!
10 Cactus are planted
Now they need to grow

Saturday, fantastic night last night, everybody really enjoyed themselves and were very complimentary about the food.  Finally finished up at 4.00am this morning.  I was up early and was confronted by lots of empty glasses and realised we had gone through a copious amount of alcohol.  Had a phone call from Pauline saying how much they had enjoyed themselves, and we know that Tom did not rise from his bed for the best part of the day, Linda is not a fish eater but said that the Bacelhau was one of the best fish dishes she had tasted, so all in all a very successful night.  Carnival weekend in Portugal this weekend, so sorry to say Douglas had to get up at a reasonable time so that we could go to the Carnival in Loule, so glad we did we had a great time and some of the floats were fantastic and the atmosphere was really great, so many people there, great fun. Not going to be a late night as we are both tired!!!

Sunday, Planted up "The Head" with a new plant so he now has a short back and sides rather than long hair!!! also got the dangle balls up on each corner at the front of the house.  Carnival day in Bordeira today, another fun time with various floats etc not on the same scale as yesterdays but still great fun plus had the added bonus of having a drink in Cafe Pinto where Antonio now has Morgans Spice, just not sure that they have got the hang of measures yet as they were rather large, still we walked down and was walking home so that will keep me sober.  A great end to a great weekend.

Dangle balls are hanging!

Week 38 of our new life

Monday, Douglas golfing today, so it is housework day for me, doesn't matter where in the world you go housework always needs to get done, eventually. Got finished by lunchtime so time for a seat on the terrace in the sun with a tuna roll and a nice cup of tea. Two hours later, lol time to get the rabbit ready for tea, mick is coming for tea tonight as Pauline is in the UK, so I thought a nice rabbit stew with tarragon dumplings will do the trick. Douglas finished 3rd at golf  which he was highly delighted with.  Rabbit stew was excellent washed down with a bottle of red, I of course had a few Morgans and then the men had a whisky and I had a Limoncina, a lemon liqueur which is really very nice.
Tuesday, zumba class this morning with a slightly fuzzy head, worked extra hard but do enjoy the lessons, we are all going out for lunch next week after class so looking forward to that, meeting new people all the time.  Had a call from Keith and Pauline about going out for dinner tonight, but last night we had agreed to go to micks tonight so will meet up with them another night. Have booked them in with Tom and Linda to come to ours for dinner a week on Friday as well, so will need to get the cookbooks out again.  Good to see the warm weather returning.  Michael was up today fixing our outdoor tap and also the terrace light and hall light and he has ground out the cracks in the chimney and sealed them, we can then paint them after 24 hours.  Not sure if this is going to solve the problem with the chimney but we will just have to try a step at a time until we resolve the issue.
Wednesday, bit of a quiet day today, am lost without the laptop, have a tablet but cannot seem to do the same things on it, think I will be getting a new one this week, Douglas is fed up with my moaning and frustration-
Thursday, out shopping today, Douglas needs to change his darts as he bought the wrong ones and I am going to get a pair of dance shoes for the Zumba and a new laptop. YES YES YES.  Managed to change the darts easy enough and Douglas got a couple of new T Shirts.  There is only one shop in the Algarve that sells dance shoes, OMG expensive, but I got a pair so my steps will be ultra good new with no squeaking.  I have also now got a brand new laptop, it will be configured for me to English in the shop so I can collect it tomorrow, just cannot wait.
Friday, Food shopping today and then need to wait on a call to go and pick up the laptop.  Off out tonight for dinner at Chicken Luis with Tom and Linda and Keith and Pauline.  No call today for the laptop, I should have known, never mind hope it will be ready tomorrow. Had a chat with Joao today regarding the garden, my rosebed is coming along nicely, just need to wait until March when I can but the rosebushes, I also want to have some planting done right at the front which is very dry and clay like soil, so Joao has suggested cactus plants of all shapes and sizes and ones that flower, they do not need a lot of water and can look very nice if planted correctly, so that is what I am going to do there.  Had a great night out and ended up back at Cafe Pinto where Antonio had got a bottle of Morgans in for me.  Linda, Pauline and I had a couple of games of darts on their electronic dartboard, only we think the electronics were not working correctly, typical when I was in the lead on both games, not to worry it was good fun.  A  Romanian man built like a brickhouse took a dislike to Douglas and decided to pick a fight, so Antonio had to call the GNR, must admit they responded very rapidly and sorted it out but it left a bad taste in the mouth as we have never come across anything like that here.  It ended up we had to all leave our cars at the Cafe and walk home, no problem, although Tom did struggle a bit and Linda had to get the car as she was home first and go and pick up the stragglers, we left them first as we turn up the hill but got home fine, Douglas did not play mud angels this time around, thank goodness.  A very good night had by all.
Saturday, both of us have slightly fuzzy heads today, heading to Venepau for lunch and yes I can go and collect the laptop.  That will let me get it ready to go tonight.  Only thing is now I need to get my old hard drive back so that I can access all my documents, photos etc, will need to contact Michael to see when we can get it back.  New laptop is great.
Sunday, spent today catching up on paperwork, booking flights to go and see my dad in March and making a list of bedding that we need to go and buy for the twin room.  We have visitors for nearly 3 weeks from the end of march, Lynne and Zoe are coming out for 5 days, then Katie and the kids for 6 days then Danny, Lesa and Madison for 7 days so that will be a busy 3 weeks, looking forward to it though and as the weather is getting better daily it should be pool time again.  It gives me a spur to get on and get the twin room sorted out as at the moment it tends to be storage so I will need to find homes for everything and also get the beds sorted out. Feel another shopping spree coming on.

Week 37 of our new life

Monday, Dinner went very well last night we all enjoyed ourselves and the food was  good too, tomato and basil soup to start, roast lamb with roasted vegetables and roast potatoes and to finish chocolate and lime cheesecake, all homemade, a good few drinks were swallowed which led to a very quiet day today. It is still raining so not missing out on too much. Michael came today to put more things on the walls, we got pictures up in the twin room, the hosepipe put on the wall outside to replace the one that was already there which we are moving to the other side of the house and Douglas is now very happy because he got the dartboard put up on the terrace, happy days darts can now be played!! Still a few more things to be done.

Tuesday, still raining and we are still living in the cloud. Zumba for me this morning and then we are off out to try and buy a cable for the ipad so that we can connect it to the TV should we wish to watch any British channels.  We also need a dehumidifier as the humidity is very high just now and it makes it feel quite damp. No luck with either so will need to go to albufeira or guia perhaps on Thursday.  My laptop has gone in for repair, well I hope it can be repaired or at least the hard drive can be saved as everything is on it photos, accounts the whole lot and I am desperately lost without it.
Wednesday, the rain is endless just now although not cold, but the forecast is set to be good again for next week, cannot moan as we know the UK is having a terrible time and winter here is really only two months January and February.  Had another ton of logs delivered today, probably won't use them all this winter but they will keep for next winter as long as they stay dry.  Our wood shed at the moment is 3 pallets covered with polythene and then 2 tarpaulins, amazingly the logs have stayed dry. Still having problems with our chimney, water is coming in somewhere and spreading into the kitchen also, we have big cracks in the chimney so guessing we will need a builder to come and check it out, oh no the thought of another builder fills me with dread, but it will have to be done.  Also managed to sort out the suitcases again, so got some more clothes hung up, also emptied another couple of boxes, gradually getting there.  Douglas let me throw the first darts into the dartboard, I did check if he was sure,  silly really as we now have our first hole in the wall, yes I missed the board completely, oh dear!!  Had a couple of lovely messages from uncle Jim and Jan, always good to hear from them, he will have attended his regimental reunion today and I am sure it will have gone well, also must say a big congratulations to Lesley and Steve McKay who became first time grandparents to their grandson Fynn today, I am sure they will enjoy every moment.
Thursday, raining again today and still living in the cloud, have forgotten what our view looks like, still sit on the terrace but do not see much lol. Portuguese lesson this morning, a very good lesson more sentences and verbs, still it is starting to stick so that is the main thing. Two of the students have moved up a class so that leaves our class with just 5 in it, an easier number to learn I think, although there was only 3 of us today, Pauline has gone back to the UK and mick decided not to go. I bought a visual dictionary as well which is a great help for translating my food shopping requirements. After lessons we went for lunch and then went to buy a dehumidifier, finally got one, set it up and it is making a difference already, thank god for that, so many different new things to get the hang of. Douglas went to 5 o clock club, the person who is looking at my laptop has advised that the graphic chip has gone so does not think that it is repairable, he will be able to transfer the data from the hard drive though so that is some consolation, he needs to run another couple of tests and then will confirm by Monday actual status, write off or not, Douglas says I need to wait until Monday. Frustrating, as it is difficult to use my tablet for all the things I use the laptop for so I am having some very frustrating moments just now. Think my fingers are too clumsy for it lol.
Friday, another wet, damp day today although it dried up late afternoon. The dehumidifier has worked wonders and made such a difference already, at least now we can bring the humidity under control, plus it makes the house seem warmer so money well spent. Then it was off shopping it takes a long time to shop for food as I try to translate everything and can now order meat and vegetables quite easily although it becomes difficult trying to explain how I want two rabbits jointed, lol but am getting there.  Hoping everyone had a good valentines day today, when Douglas woke up this morning he asked me to be his valentine, lol, I said I might as well hahaha.
Saturday, a nice dry day today so we went out to guia for a bit of shopping, Douglas needed golf trousers and joggers and also some new darts, and on the way back we got a Saturday night treat, a piece of chocolate cake oh it was good. We also tried to buy a cable for the ipad to connect to the tv to see if we can get the BBC and ITV  channels, just as well we are not too bothered as they were sold out, all the shops have had a mad rush on cables etc due to these channels being switched off they cannot get enough of them to sell. We would be just as well to order them off the internet.
Sunday, a lovely day today, very warm ended up putting sun tan lotion on. Got all the washing done and dried and had a leisurely day on the terrace. Easter holidays are going to be busy for us, Lynne and Zoe are coming to visit, then Katie and the kids and then Danny and Lesa and miss Madison and the way it has worked is there will be one night overlap as each arrives and then leaves so am looking forward to seeing them all.  Have to make a decision on my car which is still in Scotland in the careful hands of Richard. There is no point in me keeping hold of it as I am not really going to need it anymore, will be sad to see it go but such is life, I need to get my act together and start driving here next, would still just prefer to get my wee scooter.  Douglas finally got around to ordering the ipad cable today so should be here in about 10 days.

Week 36 of our new life

Monday, quite a bit of rain through the night but the sun is shining now.  Portuguese lesson today, first of two this week as Conceicao was not available last week, she is also offering to do 2 hour lessons as a couple of people have moved up to the next level.  Douglas says he will do one hour and I can do the 2.  There is dedication for you.  I must admit I enjoy the lessons and it is amazing how suddenly you do understand what is being said or at least some words and also you can answer back.  Got back and decided to sort out the stuff that we had put down into the pool room, mostly gardening tools etc, got the hose out as we will get Michael to put it up on the wall outside, strange I bought two hoses out with us but can only find one, still cant find the darts either.  After that decided to use my exercise machine, Douglas did not feel the house move so that must be a good thing, 30 minutes on that felt pretty good.  It was then time for the 5 0 Clock Club, so I was making Home made Macaroni Cheese for tea.  Have made this back in the UK many times, hummmm something went wrong, had the Parmesan, Mozzarella, Fontini and Marscapone cheese at the ready, Macaroni boiled now to add the cheese, uuumgh Brown Marscapone, never had that before, oh well in the pot it went.  Strange the Macaroni was a funny colour, but then I decided to look at the packets that I had bought, OH NO the Marscapone was Chocolate Marscapone, too late..... In came Douglas looking forward to his Macaroni Cheese, looked in the pot, its a strange colour Lynda, is it I said!!! There is a slight change to the recipe I said but never mind will tell you when you have eaten it, fingers and toes crossed by this time.  Well suffice to say that I could not eat mine, but Douglas ate his with gusto and then I confessed, oh well he said not that bad and he finished his plate.  Now the moral of the story is that Douglas enjoys all of my creations in the kitchen, and will eat the disasters whether good or bad so as not to upset my feelings, that is what I call a Husband worth his weight in Macaroni.  My lesson learned is to double check what I am looking for in Portuguese/English because I am not as smart as I think I am!!!  Mmmmm feeling a bit hungry now LOL.
Tuesday, Zumba this morning, wow was some workout but felt great afterwards just like the old days although not sure if I could do 3 sessions a week just now, maybe later.  Then we decided to go out and buy a rake, as we want to try and tidy up the drive which will involve a lot of raking to try and get it level and get rid of all the sand and cement that is the drive at the moment.  Some shopping expedition, we bought rugs for our bedroom, a rug for the twin bedroom, a wheelbarrow to assist me in bringing the logs to the front door for the log fire!!, 2 torches in case the electricity goes, a doormat for the terrace and a doormat for the front door but alas we forgot the rake, dummies!!  Also as it is quiz night tonight, thought I would take out soup from the freezer, Broccoli and Stilton, when I made this soup I could not find Stilton so I bought Roquefort which is still a blue cheese, oh dear my second disaster this week, it was so strong neither of us could eat it so it was a bread roll for tea LOL. 2 Disasters in a week is not good and I feel quite upset about it, but hey ho in the scheme of things all chefs have disasters they just don't put it in print LOL.  Off to the quiz, always a good night, Tom was question master this month and it was hard going, but surprise surprise our team won, I think we scraped through with the anagrams, it was Bounty's all round, and I won another prize on the raffle, three guesses I chose more kitchen stuff, a whisk, a spatula and a pastry brush, Douglas just sighs now when I go up and choose anything as he knows I wont pick the alcohol LOL.  Well done to Tom for doing such a good quiz. Some Social arrangements made, Indian Meal Friday night with Tom and Linda and another couple, great, good company always makes a good night then having Mick and Pauline for dinner on Sunday and hopefully will have Tom and Linda and their friends Keith and Pauline (think I have the right names) for dinner towards the end of February, as long as they don't hear of my kitchen disasters I will be alright!!!

Wednesday, early start today as Douglas golfing, always have to get up at silly O clock, like to make sure he gets his tea and toast before going out.  Very rainy and misty definitely living in the cloud today and you can feel the damp, not to worry heating will go on earlier.  My day in the house so cleaning done, a couple of batches of soup made for the freezer, Chicken with Leeks for Tea and I even polished my brass scales in the kitchen so they look brand new again, considering Douglas bought them for me about 20 years ago they are still going strong, although they are still pounds and ounces I use them all the time.  By 4.00pm I was beginning to flag and felt a snooze would be good, but I got on the exercise machine and worked it off so feeling good.  Douglas enjoyed his golf, which again led to the conversation of me getting out to play, when he is ready!! me!! I am always ready.  Think Douglas lives in hope of my batteries going flat, HaHa no chance.
Whats shining now
Thursday, Portuguese lesson this morning, sentences and vowels, goodness me getting our head around the vowels is not easy, none of them are pronounced the same way as we would usually say them, again I enjoyed the lesson, Douglas just puts his head in his hands and Pauline could not grasp the lesson at all today, just an off day it will come together eventually, and nobody said it was going to be easy.  We have had quite a bit of heavy rain again this week, which has pointed out yet again our chimney problem, which we think is also responsible for the leak in the kitchen, and a new one which is in our bedroom, oh just when we are getting everything together.  Still we are aware of it and will have to deal with them once the better weather comes back, which will not be too long.  Michael was in today, so we now have the rail in the wardrobe in the double bedroom, at last we can hang some more clothes up, the rate we are going guests will have minimal space in the wardrobes, so we just have to hope they don't bring a lot of clothes with them LOL, we also have some pictures up in the Living Room, looking more like a home every day.  Plenty more things to go up yet.  A really good thing about the rain is that the Cisterna has filled up nicely and is nearly full, so saving us some water costs and the swimming pool overflow is working really hard as that has risen by a whole tile, pity we cannot divert that into the cisterna as well.  House is nice and cosy in the evenings with the log fire on and the radiators, plus we can still sit out on the terrace.  Another downside today we have lost all our BBC Channels due to the satellite changing and evidently tomorrow we will lose the ITV channels, so no British TV, for now anyway, there is an answer which we will hopefully get over the next couple of days, no doubt will cost more money and having just spent out on the sky package for a year and a new satellite dish this is quite galling, but hey ho glad we don't watch TV that much.  Douglas had his 5 0 clock club tonight and I jumped on the exercise machine for 40 minutes and then made Fennel Soup with Roasted Ribs for tea, too good to mention.

Friday, shopping day today and then out for an Indian meal tonight with Tom and Linda, Keith and Pauline and Michael and Isobel, went to the Taste of Punjab in Sao Bras, anybody that knows me knows I do not do Indian food but I enjoyed the meal that I had Chicken with Banana and Poppadums washed down with a few glasses of Morgans, once we had finished at the Indian we went on to Cafe Pinto for a few more drinks, a good night had by all.  The owner of Cafe Pinto gave us all goodies to take away, we got a small bag, a pen and a lighter all with the cafe pinto logo on them, not sure why but it was a nice touch and he is also going to get a bottle of Morgans in, that will save me carrying my own in my handbag and also ensure that I will go there more often.  I am thinking of starting a darts team, ladies and men, once or twice a month, we can meet at ours, play some darts, have supper and a few drinks and will call it the Friday Club LOL I need to see how many will be interested.  We might even be able to hold it at Cafe Pinto as they have an electronic dartboard in a separate room, will need to find someone to speak portuguese better than me to see if we can arrange it.
Saturday, up early this morning feeling a little bit rough around the edges after last night.  Michael was coming to put some more things up on the walls, so got the shelves and pictures up in the kitchen, the mirror in the hall and the shelves in our bedroom.  Does make such a difference with things now getting put up.  Had quite a bit of rain again and it was feeling damp and cold today, possible my hangover didnt help. A good day for cosying up on the couch and doing nothing.

Sunday, another damp rainy day today. We have Mick and Pauline for dinner today am doing tomato soup, roast lamb with roasted vegetables and chocolate and lime cheesecake, should keep everybody happy. A couple of bottles of Red with a couple of beers and we wont notice the weather.
